This unique fundraising event is organized by the Department of Justice BC Region and the Aboriginal Lawyers Forum of the Canadian Bar Association, BC Chapter (the “ALF”). The event brings the Vancouver BC legal community together and has had great success. Although this year’s auction has ended you can still view the interesting collection of donated items here https://32Auctions.com/NAD2016.
For the first 7 years we raised almost $50,000 toward the CBABC’s Aboriginal Law Student Scholarship Trust. The Trust is now sustainably funded to grant scholarships each year to Aboriginal law students attending UBC, UVic and TRU. Our event now raises funds towards the ALF whose mandate is to support Aboriginal law students, graduates and practitioners in order to enhance the stature and influence of Aboriginal people in the legal profession. This year’s auction raised just over $6,000.
The auction runs each year during the week of June 21 – NATIONAL ABORIGINAL DAY. In fact the entire month of June is National Aboriginal History Month. Plus National Aboriginal Day kicks off Celebrate Canada! - an eleven-day celebration that begins with National Aboriginal Day on June 21st and ends with Canada Day on July 1st.
In conjunction with the auction we host an evening reception which is the celebratory part of our event. This year’s reception on Friday, June 17, 2016 was a fun success as always. We were happy to hold it again at Skwachays Lodge Aboriginal Hotel & Gallery, supporting the Vancouver Native Housing Society. A performance by Cree musician/singer/songwriter Eden Fine Day (Sweetgrass First Nation) truly added to the festivities.
We have already started to collect donations for next year’s 2017 event. We’re sure it will be another interesting collection. We plan on holding the reception again at Skwachays Lodge and we can’t wait to see which rising Aboriginal performer will take the spotlight next year.
